About Us

Middle Fork Sporthorses is a first class equine facility nestled high in the rocky mountains of sunny northern Colorado. Breeding, buying, selling and training a stock of world class sport horses has been the norm for years in this beautiful location. These include Dressage horses, jumpers and field hunters imported from mainland Europe and Ireland.

Boulder, Colorado residents, Stephen and Vicki Cherner’s passion for equine sport has found them owning two top facilities managed by two highly qualified trainers both who not only happen to be from Ireland, but grew up next door to each other, competing in pony club throughout their youth. Here at Middle Fork, they have British Horse Society approved, dressage trainer, Colin Bate. At their sister facility, Merry Chase Farm, outside Middleburg, VA, (www.merrychasefarm.com), the focus is on hunting where trainer Carol Meade and husband Gus reside. From fox hunting in VA., to hunting in Co, from Eventing to entering the occasional pare pace, from trail rides to jumping and Dressage, the Cherner’s still find time to take advantage of their trainers expertise, keeping them fine tuned for their next equine sport adventure.

One adventure is marketing their promising young breeding stallion Donnersmark. Hand picked by trainer Colin Bate, Donnersmark, born in 1997 and standing at 16.2 hh, is a direct son of the legendary European Dressage Champion, Donnerhall. Donnersmarks’ dam, Walzer-Rubina, is by another noteable champion stallion Rubenstein. Donnersmark was approved by the Rheinland Pfalz-Saar International in 2002 and won the Region V Cosequin Breeders Series Championship in 2003. Donnersmark hit the ground running in 2004 with his debut at Del Mar where he consistently placed in the top three showing at first level. Back in Colorado, he took first place showing under Axel Steiner at the Aspen Dressage Festival, and throughout the summer continued to make a splash gathering up his own fan club along the way.

Much of the fan club has turned into breedings to Donnersmark. With a good number of foals expected in 2005, his progeny from 2003 and 2004 are showing great promise. Three of his 2003 filly’s took the top three high scores overall at the Rheinland Pfalz-Saar approvals in 2003, with rarely given 8.0 and 8.1’s in movement.

With a lot of attention with Donnersmark, and his foals, to the media coverage from hosting Dressage clinics with Jan Ebeling, the Cherner’s and trainer Colin Bate are eagerly anticipating what is next as the new year comes for Middle Fork Sporthorses.
